Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What age can my child join wrestling? A. If your child is in Pk and 4 years old they are able to join.
Q. What times and days are practices?
A. Boys PK-K is on Monday evenings from 6:00-6:40pm, Boys 1st-3rd grade is Mon & Thurs evenings from 6:45-7:45pm, Boys 4th-6th Grade is on Mon & Wed after school from 3:30-4:45pm, Girls K-6th grade is on Thursday evenings from 6:00-6:40pm.
Q. Do I need to have wresting shoes and headgear?
A. If you are a beginner wrestler that may just do practices, there is no need. If you are going to participate in tournaments, shoes and head gear are recommended, especially for the older wrestlers. We do have limited gear available on a first come first serve basis and welcome any gently used gear to pass along to the next kids.
Q. Do we have to do individual tournaments?
A. No, but it is encouraged when you feel they are ready. They provide valuable experience that will help your child improve.
Q. What should I expect at an individual tournament?
A.When you arrive, your child will weigh-in and will be paired up with children close to their weight and age. Age divisions typically are divided by grades: PK-1, 1st-2nd, 3rd-4th, 5th-6th. They will call each division to report and will assign your child and their mat. Most are run as a round robin with 3-4 kids per bracket. Once they are finished, they will head to the podium to receive their award.
Q. Will there be coaches at each tournament? I am not sure I know how to coach my child.
A. Coaches will be at several tournaments throughout the season. We will communicate which ones they plan to attend. Don't worry if you don't know what to do, other parents will be more than eager to help you out.
Q. How do I know what tournaments to go to?
A. Check out www.theguillotine.com for all the local youth tournaments. We will communicate about upcoming local tournaments via the Band App and Facebook.
Q. What is the wresting 'team' and how does my child become part of it?
A. We will participate in several K-6th grade and possibly K-3rd grade team tournaments this season.Although we encourage participation in team events, the tournament teams are typically comprised of older and more experience wrestlers on the other teams. If your child is inexperienced or in a younger grade, participation in team events may not be in their best interest at this time.
Q. What are the weight classes for team tournaments?
A. Typically, K-6th grade team tournaments follow Northland Youth Wrestling Association (NYWA) weight classes. NYWA weight classes are 45,50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 84, 88, 93, 102, 115, 130, and heavyweight. K-6 grade team events are for wrestlers in K-6 grade and wrestlers in K-6 are eligible to wrestle at any weight class.
