U.S. Dept. of Ag Extends Free Meals for Kids Through December 31, 2020
You may have recently heard that the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture(USDA) Secretary Sonny Perdue issued a press release announcing an extension of the Summer Food Service Program (free meals for all children) through December 31, 2020.
This was an unanticipated announcement and a special bulletin released late Monday by the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) identified that MDE still needs to fully understand how this will affect schools. The USDA school food program is managed by MDE and where Springfield School District will get implementation guidance. This is how it functions for school districts across the nation.
When our school district receives clarity on how to proceed with this extension, we will inform you and the public accordingly. Extending the USDA Summer Food Service Program would potentially eliminate meal charging at school for any student regardless of ability to pay. This would potentially extend to providing “grab and go” meals to our daycares and other settings. A qualifying child is a high school senior or younger.
To simplify this announcement, our school could potentially extend our summer “free” meal program practices for children who are in the school building and for children who are not.

Those students who will be participating on an athletic team or in an activity need to sign the MSHSL Eligibility Brochure. This should be done online and by using your e-signatures. Directions for registering and the link is below. This link will become available about August 13th. Those participating on an athletic team must have had a sports physical in the last three years. Typically 7th and 10th graders are due to have a sports physical. All 7th-12th graders should have received an Eligibility email, with more information regarding the 20-21 seasons. There is a document in your Privit profile that must be signed by both parent and student saying you have received the email and fully understand and agree to all SHS and MSHSL policies.
The MSHSL Board of Directors Executive Committee approved the extension of the expiration date of the Three-Year Physical Clearance.

*Each student must still complete the annual health history questionnaire.
*Any student who had not previously participated and who does not have medical clearance to participate will be required to have a physical and be cleared to participate.
