Elementary School Counseling

*If interested in counseling services please contact Mr. Boettger by phone or e-mail to talk about setting up services*

What It Is:

·         Counseling aims to improve mental and emotional well-being by providing support and guidance to help students navigate and address current problems and developing coping skills.

·         The needs are identified by the family, student, or teacher based on what they see and hear from the student.

·         The service is provided and funded by the school.

Where:

·         Counselors meet with the students at school.

When:

·         During the school day.

·         It can be scheduled or as needed.

·         When it’s scheduled it is on average once or twice a week, for on average of 15-20 minutes.

·         Older students are more capable of seeking it out as needed. It can be as long as needed.

How:

·         Counseling can be individualized or a small group made up of 2-5 students.

·         It is a short term service that can last weeks or months.

What It Is Not:

Even though counseling and therapy are services that aim to improve the mental and emotional well-being of their clients. Therapy is different in that it is a more intensive service that delves into deeper and more complex issues and past experiences. It is a longer term service that can last months or even years. To qualify for the services the client must complete a Diagnostic Assessment (DA) which is a questionnaire based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM5) which is reviewed by a clinician.
